The AO Code (Assessing Officer Code) is a mandatory alphanumeric identifier used to determine your tax jurisdiction. It consists of four elements: Area Code, AO Type, Range Code, and AO Number.
1. How to Find Your AO Code
The method depends on whether you are applying for a new PAN or checking your existing jurisdiction.
For New PAN Applicants (Before Application)
Via Protean (formerly NSDL): Visit the AO Code Search page, select the first letter of your city, and choose your city from the list to view all applicable codes.
Via UTIITSL: Go to the UTIITSL portal, navigate to PAN Card Services, and click Search for AO Code Details.
For Existing PAN Holders (To Check Current AO)
Income Tax e-Filing Portal: Use the Know Your AO tool. Enter your PAN and a valid mobile number, then validate with the OTP received to view your Jurisdictional Assessing Officer details.
Profile Settings: Alternatively, log in to the e-Filing portal, go to My Profile > PAN Card to see your assigned Area Code and AO Type.
2. Selection Criteria
Your AO Code is determined by your address and category:
Salaried Individuals: Use the AO Code corresponding to your office address if your income is solely from salary or a salary-business combination.
Other Individuals: Use the code for your residential address.
Non-Individuals (Companies, HUFs, Trusts): Must use their office address.
Students/Unemployed: There is no specific code; you can leave the section blank, and one will be allocated based on your PIN code.
